1. Organize Your Belongings Before Loading
One of the biggest mistakes people make is starting to load a portable storage container without a plan. Before anything goes inside, organize your belongings by size, weight, and how frequently you’ll need access to them.
Use sturdy, similarly sized boxes
Standard-size moving boxes are easier to stack than a collection of boxes in completely different shapes and sizes. Strong boxes also help prevent your belongings from shifting or collapsing during storage.
Clearly label each box with:
Its contents
The room it belongs to
Whether it contains fragile items
Whether you’ll need easy access to it
If you know you’ll need certain items before everything else, mark those boxes accordingly and place them where they’ll be easiest to reach.
Don’t leave empty space inside boxes
Fill empty areas inside boxes with towels, blankets, clothing, or packing paper. This helps prevent items from shifting while also providing additional protection. Just be careful not to overpack boxes to the point that they become too heavy or difficult to safely lift.

For larger moves or long-term storage, consider creating a basic inventory of what you’re storing. You can also take photos of valuable or important belongings before they go into the container. A little organization at the beginning can save you a lot of time later.
2. Properly Wrap Furniture and Appliances
Furniture and appliances are some of the largest and most expensive items you’re likely to put into a portable storage container, so give them some extra protection.
Protect furniture surfaces
Wrap sofas, chairs, mattresses, tables, dressers, and other furniture with moving blankets, furniture pads, or other appropriate protective materials. For upholstered furniture, use breathable furniture covers when appropriate. Avoid trapping moisture against furniture for extended periods. For wood furniture, protect corners and surfaces from scratches and impacts. When practical, remove drawers and secure them separately so they don’t slide open during handling.
Protect appliances
Clean and completely dry appliances before storing them. For refrigerators and freezers, make sure they are fully dry before storage and leave the doors positioned according to the manufacturer’s storage recommendations. Use padding around appliances to help prevent scratches and contact with other items.
Disassemble large furniture when practical
If a table, bed frame, shelving unit, or other large item can safely be disassembled, doing so can significantly improve your use of space. Keep screws, bolts, brackets, and other hardware together in labeled bags. Store or attach the hardware with the corresponding furniture so it’s easy to find when you’re ready to reassemble everything. The goal isn’t simply to fill the container. The goal is to use the space efficiently while protecting your belongings.
3. Stack From Floor to Ceiling
This is one of the most important tips for maximizing portable storage container space: Think vertically. Our containers are approximately 8 feet high, so don’t only think about how much floor space you have. Think about how much usable space you have from the floor all the way to the ceiling. Start with your heaviest and sturdiest belongings on the bottom, then work your way upward.
Put heavy items on the bottom
Place heavier boxes, sturdy furniture, and other substantial items toward the bottom of your load. Place lighter boxes and less durable belongings toward the top. This helps protect fragile items and creates a more stable load.
Build stable walls
Whenever possible, stack boxes and belongings tightly together without forcing them into place. Think of your load as building a stable wall from one side of the container to the other. Avoid creating tall stacks of loose or unstable items that could fall when the doors are opened.
Fill the gaps
Once your larger items are positioned, look for smaller spaces. That space between a dresser and a box? Use it. The area underneath a table? Use it. The space inside certain furniture pieces? It may be usable too, depending on the item. Small belongings can often fit inside larger pieces of furniture, helping you make the most of your available storage space. Just be careful not to place heavy objects inside furniture that isn’t designed to support the additional weight.
Keep important items accessible
If you know you’ll need access to certain belongings, don’t bury them behind everything else. Place frequently needed items closer to the doors or create a small access area when possible.
4. Balance the Weight if Your Container Is Being Transported
If your portable storage container will be transported to another location, proper weight distribution becomes especially important. Distribute weight as evenly as possible throughout the container rather than concentrating most of the heavy items in one area.
A good rule of thumb is:
Keep heavier belongings low.
Place lighter belongings higher.
Distribute weight throughout the container.
Avoid creating an excessively heavy area on one side.

Secure belongings for transport

Important: Use tie-down equipment correctly and only attach straps to appropriate structural points. Never rely on a fragile piece of furniture, shelving, or another unsecured item as an anchor point.
If your container is staying on your property, extensive transport-related weight balancing and tie-down requirements may not apply in the same way. However, stable stacking and safe packing are still important.
5. Never Store Hazardous or Prohibited Items
Portable storage containers are designed for household and business storage—not hazardous materials. Never place hazardous, illegal, or prohibited items inside a portable storage container.
Examples may include:
Fuel or gasoline
